Anaplasmosis is a serious condition that usually affects mature cows and bulls between summer and the early part of fall. While this disease is more common in the southern areas, the increase in cattle movement in the last decade has caused it to spread northward

I found an article on The Dairy Site that talks about the effects of mineral supplementation with regard to controlling Anaplasmosis. The article talks of adding feed-grade chlortetracycline to the animal’s mineral supplements or feed.

While producers can give this to their cows and bulls,.the article stresses the importance of having a veterinarian prescribe the proper dosage. There are two options, one being hand-fed formulation and the other is free-choice formulation.

Cattle that survive this disease recover slowly during a three-month period. According to the Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management or ICWDM, cattle that recover from this disease without adequate medication become carriers.
