This article sums up what many nutritionists have said during our calls when asked about the importance of nutrition in the beef industry. While some cows just seem to thrive no matter what they are eating, it’s never safe to assume they won’t cost you money, despite what their outer appearance looks like.
Jeffery Hall, who works with Utah’s State Diagnostic Lab, spoke to producers at the recent Cattle Industry Convention in Phoenix, AZ. He said that mineral deficiencies have become widespread. Deficiencies of selenium, copper, vitamin A, vitamin E, and manganese can lead to various diseases in cattle.
He did a nationwide copper deficiency test and found that 53% to 70% of cattle are copper-deficient. He also determined that each state needs supplementation. Hall noted that it is not the lack of micronutrients that directly cause disease. It is the effect that is caused by these deficiencies towards the immune and reproductive systems that can cause damage. Click here to read the full article.
